A fire that engulfed a Volkswagen Vanagon delayed traffic on the westbound lanes of Highway 50 near Spooner Summit for nearly an hour Tuesday evening.
Commuters had to wait while firefighters from Carson City and Douglas County doused the car and cleared the wreckage. Traffic was backed up from 6:30 p.m. to approximately 7:30 p.m.
Firefighter Jason Danen said the departments had no trouble getting to the wreckage. An engine from Stateline was on scene when the Carson crew arrived. However, traffic could not be diverted because of dividers installed last year.
The divider limits the number of accidents but presents a difficulty for emergency access and traffic control in emergencies, Danen said. There is only one opening in the divider between the valley floor and the summit.
No injuries from the fire were reported.
