Carson boys soccer team lose 7-1 to Reno

RENO - It was payback time on Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately, for the Carson High School boys soccer team.

After beating Reno 5-1 less than two weeks ago, the Huskies got their revenge with a 7-1 win over the Senators at Foster Field.

With the win, Reno (9-1-2) remains in second place behind South Tahoe in the Sierra League while the Senators (6-4-2) stay in fourth place. Douglas (7-2-3) is in third place after its 6-1 win over Wooster on Saturday.

After being projected to finish near the top of the league, Carson will probably have to settle for either the third or fourth seed at next month's Northern 4A playoffs. However, Carson coach Bruce Bergantz doesn't care where his Senators end up because he knows they have the talent to beat anyone on any given day.

"But I never know which Carson team is going to show up,"Bergantz said. "Next game, it could be the team that beat Reno 5-1 or it might be today's team."

After scoring two goals in the first 25 minutes on Saturday, Reno's John Clancy-Tone and Luis Calvo ended the half with two more outstanding goals. Clancy-Tone put the Huskies up 3-0 with his 20-yard blast, which sailed into the upper corner of the net after getting past Carson goalie Sean Carter. Then less than a minute later, Luis Calvo scored a long-range bomb of his own, this time from 25-yards out as Reno led 4-0 at halftime.

"We got outplayed in every aspect of the game," Bergantz said. "We didn't go to the ball on defense, we didn't move the ball on offense. They just beat us all over the field."

In the second half, Reno went up 5-0 on a Eric Reynolds goal, his second of the game. Carson made it 5-1 in the 69th minute after Jesus Cid's indirect kick into the penalty box found the head of John Shorrock, who then flicked the ball past Reno's goalie.

But the Huskies weren't done yet as Jorge Cubero, who also scored in the first half, found the net again to give the Huskies a 6-1 lead. Then in the 84th minute, Calvo finished the scoring at 7-1 after beating two Carson defenders and also Cid, who was playing goalie for Carter, who was replaced after allowing a season-high six goals in the game.

"He's an excellent keeper, probably one of better ones in the area," Bergantz said. "But he's young, so his decision making is not quite there yet."

Carson forward Jesse Steele remains sidelined with an ankle injury. Bergantz still isn't sure when or if he'll be back. Also, senior Aaron Satterwhite is back on the field after missing the Wooster game with a knee injury.

"We do have some injuries but that's not why we lost," Bergantz said. "The first time we played Reno, we were on and they were off. Today, it was the opposite."
