Four teams remain in the Northern 4A Regional volleyball tournament. Only three will succeed in keeping their season alive and move on to the state tournament in Reno next week, so expect to see some stiff competition when the Regional semifinals and finals are staged today in South Lake Tahoe.

Douglas squares off against Galena in the first semifinal today at South Tahoe High School. Then Carson takes the court to play defending Northern and state 4A champion Fallon at noon.

The losers meet at 4 p.m. to determine the third-place finisher and final qualifier for the NIAA/U.S. Bank State Tournament next week at Galena. The two winners play at 6 p.m. for the tournament championship.

"We have to win one match Saturday to go to state," said Carson coach Daryl James, whose club is 14-3 on the season. "We have our work cut out for us. We're going to have to go to battle, and we're going to have to play hard start to finish if we want to go."

Fallon is undefeated in Nevada this season and is the first-place finisher from the High Desert League. Douglas is the Sierra League champion and is looking to play in the Northern finals for the 10th straight year.
