The Carson girls basketball team put together its best performance during this past week to win the consolation championship at the Basic Tournament in Henderson.
After struggling through its first three games, Carson finished the tournament with a 37-31 win over Buena Vista on Thursday.
"It was the best game we played down there," Carson coach Paul Croghan said. "We didn't feel we played very well the first three games. It was nice to end on a positive note."
The Senators trailed 22-18 at halftime and 29-25 after three quarters, but outscored Buena Vista 12-2 in the fourth quarter to pull out the when.
"We took pretty good care of the ball in the situations we needed to," Croghan said.
Meghan Gradert and Megan Mulvaney combined to contain Buena Vista's 6-0 post player, who had been averaging more than 20 points a game in the tournament. Gradert and Mulvaney held her to 15 points.
Katie Kotter scored 11 points while Mulvaney and Gradert each added 10 points for the Senators (7-4).
Carson will continue playing against tough competition next week when it begins play in the McQueen Tournament at 5 p.m. Wednesday against Dobson of Mesa, Ariz. "That's what it's all about trying to get experience we need," Croghan said.
