Carson City Mayor Ray Masayko has declared September "Library Card Sign-up Month".
As the school year begins, Library Director Sally Edwards said a library card is "the most valuable back-to-scool supply a child can have."
"If your child doesn't have a library card, we can get them one," she said. "Libraries offer a wealth of information for people of all ages for free. In the current era when there are so many forms of communications children need to learn how to access information.
"I urge people who don't have one to come get one and take advantage of the great service we have here."
Edwards said the card sign-up is a national event sponsored by the American Library Association. She said the library has about 36,000 library card holders and issues 350 cards a month.
The cards are free and can be used at any Nevada library. All you need to get a card is some form of identification and proof of residency.
The Carson City Library offers public Internet access and has weekly programs designed to stimulate an interest in reading and learning.
The library is located at 900 N. Roop St. Call 887-2244 for information.
