Daniels, Kershaw Winners in Storey County

In Storey County, incumbent Justice of the Peace Annette Daniels soundly defeated attorney Harold Swafford 1,050 votes to 656, and in a tighter race Republican Bob Kershaw passed Democratic hopeful Dennis Miller 913 to 777 in his bid for District 3 commissioner.

"I'd like to thank the people of Storey County very much for their support and faith in the kind of job I'm doing," Daniels said. "I've prepared myself well, and I think the training and experience I've received on the bench has made me effective on the job."

Swafford could not be reached for comment.

Originally appointed when her predecessor resigned in1988, Daniels trained for the position with continuing education from entities such as the National Judicial College, the Nevada Judges Association and the National Judges Association.

She and her husband of 28 years moved there from San Diego in 1981.

Storey County Commissioner District 3

Republican Kershaw slipped past Democratic hopeful Miller with 54 percent of the vote in the race for Storey County's District 3 County commissioner seat.

"People want me in there because of my experience in Storey County politics over the last eight years. They like what they hear and the direction that I want to take the county," Kershaw said, noting that slow residential growth, protecting water rights and the quality of life in Storey County are central to his philosophy.

"To all my supporters, thank you very much. I will do the best I can," he said. "I'd like to thank Dennis Miller for a refreshingly clean campaign, and I encourage him to stay involved in the county. This has been a hard-fought but clean campaign. I'm glad it's over, and I'm looking forward to the challenges ahead."

Miller said he was disappointed, but he felt it was a good race. Kershaw had better name recognition and more experience in political positions here, like the school board.

"I congratulate Bob, and wish him the best," Miller said. "I met a lot of great people during this race, and made a lot of new friends. I intend to remain active in Storey County politics, and represent the people as best as I can. I'd like to thank the people that voted for me, and I'm sorry I can't represent them on the commission."
