Danville's bats lift them to victory

The Danville Hoots scored runs in every inning except the third and fifth to beat the Ogden Outlaws 15-2 in Capitol Classic Red Division play on Tuesday at Carson High.


Pitcher Matt Brown only gave up three hits for Danville, Calif., and he struck out five batters while picking up the win. Danville used a nine-run sixth to shut the door on an Ogden, Utah, team that allowed three runs to score as the result of five errors.


Adam Ricks was named the game's MVP after hitting 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs.


"We came here to see where we were as a team, and right now we look pretty good," Ricks said.


Danville improved to 2-0 in the tournament, tying them for first place in the Red division with the Capitols and Woodward, Okla. The Hoots beat the All Hawaii Select team 11-6 Monday night.


Danville scored one run in the first and two off Ogden fielding errors in the second to jump out to an early 3-0 lead.


"Our goal was to come out early and get a fast start," Ricks said.


Danville then scored three runs in the fourth to increase its lead to 6-0. Ogden got a run back in the bottom of the fourth after Tim Lunders hit an RBI double that scored Dan Stitt.


In the sixth, Brian Groman hit a leadoff double. Ogden pitcher Justin Abbott walked Luke Cherry, and Ricks' RBI single scored Groman to make the score 7-1.


Abbott walked Kevin Mangels before Rob Slattery hit a two-run double. Ryan Lymangrover hit a two run homer to pour on the runs as Danville's lead increased to 11-1.


After an error that scored two runs, Cherry hit a RBI double and Ricks added a two-run double as Danville led 15-1.


Phil Sanders hit a RBI single for Ogden that finished the scoring at 15-2.


Danville plays Carmel at 11 a.m. today, while Ogden takes on Cherry Creek at 10 a.m.


Woodward 5, St. Louis 4


Pinch-hitter Cody Cresswell hit a RBI single in the bottom of the seventh that scored Greg Lindsey and lifted the Travelers (2-0) past the Eagles (0-2).


Woodward's Jon Bushman was named the game's MVP after crushing a solo home run in the sixth that tied the score at 4-4. Bushman finished the game 2-for-2.


Woodward relief pitcher Chris Treat entered in the fourth and shut down the Eagles by striking out six batters. Bubba Smith picked up the win for Woodward.


Woodward battles Parma at 1 p.m. today, while St. Louis plays Austin at 4 p.m.


Gray Division


Boise 6, Cherry Creek 4


After losing 11-5 in their first game on Monday afternoon, the Gems (1-1) kept themselves in the tournament by beating Cherry Creek (0-2).


Game MVP Ben Newton did about everything possible in his team's victory, as he pitched seven innings and struck out six batters while batting 2-for-4 with a double.


Landon Stroebel had a two-run single in the second and a RBI double in the third for the Gems, who take on the Capitols tonight at 8 p.m. Cherry Creek draws the early game, as it faces Ogden at 10 a.m. today.


Santa Rosa 5, Carmel 2


Santa Rosa (2-0) scored two runs in the second and third innings and added one in the fifth to beat the Bulls (0-2).


Joel Demaria pitched all seven innings and struck out seven to pick up the win.


Craig Kessler went 3-for-4 and Matt Raichart 1-for-2 with a double and two RBIs to lead Santa Rosa to its second tournament victory. Santa Rosa plays Hawaii today at 2 p.m., while the Bulls take on Danville today at 11 a.m.


Parma 18, Austin 15


A nine-run fifth inning rally helped Parma (2-0) remain unbeaten in the tournament as it outlasted the Slam (1-1) in a game that saw the two teams combine for 36 hits.


Luke Howard, the game MVP, hit 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, while Jason Newcomb hit 3-for-4 with three RBIs, Steve Conter 3-for-5 and Chad Frk 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs. Brian Tompkins had a pair of doubles, a triple and four RBIs, while Clayton Turner homered and drove in three runs for Austin.


Parma takes on Woodward at 1 p.m. today, while Austin plays St. Louis at 4 p.m.
