DAYTON - Normally closed this time of year, the Dayton Historic Museum will be open for the entire Nevada Day weekend.
Located on Shady Lane, the museum contains numerous exhibits relating to the community's past, dating from the state's first discovery of gold in nearby Gold Canyon. The museum building is the second oldest school house in Nevada.
Dayton Historic Society President Laura Tennant said now that Nevada Day is a three-day celebration, the community wants to take an active part in the festivities.
"After all we are the sight of the first discovery of gold in the state and some historians now agree we are the first permanent white settlement," she said. "We also have brochures available for what has proven to be a very popular walking tour through the community."
The museum will be open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Sunday.
