WASHINGTON - A New Jersey company is recalling about 294,000 disposable cigarette lighters because they lack federally required child-resistant mechanisms.
Vaid Enterprises of Jersey City, N.J., is recalling the lighters because young children could ignite them, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Thursday.
Neither the company nor the agency is aware of any injuries involving the lighters.
The disposable lighters being recalled are oval-shaped ''BIC'' and mini-''BIC'' brand lighters. They have a green, red, blue, black or yellow body and a metal top.
The standard size lighters have the UPC number 3 086120 600020. The mini-lighters have the UPC number 3 086120 600051.
Convenience, gas, grocery and thrift stores in the East sold the lighters from January through April for about $1 each.
Consumers should stop using these lighters immediately and return them to the place of purchase for a refund.
For more information, consumers should call the CPSC at 1-800-638-2772.
