Douglas boys run all over Fallon 7-0

FALLON - On Tuesday, the Douglas High girls soccer team tore apart Fallon 7-0. On Wednesday, the boys team did the same by the exact same score as the Tigers improved to 3-0 on the season after an easy 7-0 win over the Green Wave.

"I thought we played really well," coach Phillip Sheridan said. "We possessed the ball real well and our unselfish play brought our team along."

Junior Chris Bargman scored three goals and five different Tigers had assists in the win, which really surprised Sheridan despite the fact that his team lacks a true goal scorer.

"I was shocked at the amount of assists that we had,"said Sheridan, whose son plays soccer at the University of Southern Colorado. "But that's something we're concentrating on because nobody here is superstar. So we try and share the ball."

And just like Douglas girls soccer coach Fred Schmidt, Sheridan isn't one to run up the score.

"I don't believe in running the game up and it's not going to help us if we do," Sheridan said.

With previous wins over Reed and Sparks, Sheridan and his team are in their familiar position of being in the hunt for the league championship. But this year's team has only two returners from last year's squad who lost 2-1 in the state semi-finals to eventual champion Green Valley High.

"We're a young team," said Sheridan, who mentioned that he still isn't sure how strong his team is yet. "We've played some of the weaker teams but we are working hard towards those games against the better teams."

Even though Douglas has always been competitive, Sheridan considers South Tahoe and Carson as the teams to beat in the Sierra League. Besides the Tigers youthful appearance, the team was also dealt a major blow after two key players were suspended after violating team rules. Both players will not rejoin the team.

"I think they (the team) were down a little bit when they heard," Sheridan said about the suspensions. "But they bounced back to beat Reed and they know what they gotta do."

On Saturday, Douglas takes on Elko, which Sheridan said is always a tough team to play against.

"Elko always is a real physical game," Sheridan said. "They are a real direct team and they knock the ball down there and try to get numbers in box. Then they hope for a mistake and score."

Meanwhile, Sheridan stresses the possession game. So it should be real interesting how the two teams will match up this weekend.

"I don't like to play a real direct game and I think everybody knows it," Sheridan said. "We can hold the ball all day long and if they get one goal in, then we're dead."
