RENO - Reno High School quarterback Sean Davis threw for only 115 yards, but his 9-yard touchdown pass to Mike Anderson made all the difference as the Huskies recorded their first Sierra League victory of the season with a 22-14 overtime win over Douglas Friday night at Foster Field.
In overtime, the Tigers had a chance to tie the game but the Huskies' David Edington intercepted quarterback Jared Kenison's pass on third-and-goal.
"It's a tough way to lose," Douglas coach Mike Rippee said. "But give Reno credit, they played well."
Douglas (2-5) now drops to 0-3 in Sierra League play and must win its final two games against Wooster and Carson to even have a chance at making the playoffs. Reno improves to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in league to keep its playoff hopes alive.
The Huskies, who never led in regulation, nearly won the game at the end of the fourth quarter except Chuck Goodnight's 42-yard field goal attempt came up short with 18 seconds left.
In the second quarter, Douglas running back Monte McCann scored from 2 yards out to give Douglas a 7-0 lead. But the Huskies tied the game at 7-7 on their next drive after Josh Kivi scored on a 8-yard run.
In the third quarter, Kenison hooked up with a streaking Gabe Hatchett, who pulled down the 29-yard pass to make it 14-7. But Reno again came back on their next drive. This time, Davis threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Bishop-Parise that tied the game at 14-14.
Douglas had a great chance in the fourth quarter to score the go-ahead touchdown after an 11-yard Edington punt that gave the Tigers first-and-10 at Reno's 28. But on third-and-4, Kenison fumbled the snap and Reno jumped on the ball.
"We had plenty of opportunities other than those last two turnovers," Rippee said. "The game wasn't won or lost on that one play."
McCann finished the game with 116 yards rushing and Hatchett caught three passes for 76 yards for the Tigers. Next up for the Tigers is Wooster, now 3-0 in the Sierra League after Friday's 14-7 win over Hug. Rippee knows that his team must beat the Colts and rival Carson the following week to have a chance at making the Northern 4A playoffs. But he said that they'll take it one game at a time.
"We just have to focus on Wooster," Rippee said. "They have a fine team, and after that game, then we'll see where were at.
"These guys have done everything they've been asked to do. I'm not ashamed of them at all."
