Elvin Bishop's daughter's boyfriend arrested on burglary charges

CONCORD, Calif. - A man sought for questioning in the disappearance of blues guitarist Elvin Bishop's daughter has been arrested on burglary charges, police said Tuesday.

Selina Bishop, 22, has not been heard from since her mother, Jennifer Villarin, 45, and James Gamble, 54, were shot to death in Selina Bishop's studio apartment in Marin County on Thursday.

Marin County investigators accompanied Concord police as they arrested Selina Bishop's boyfriend, Glenn Helzer, 30, on burglary charges Monday.

Concord police released no details about the burglary and referred all questions about Helzer's possible connection to the Bishop case to Marin County authorities, who planned a Tuesday afternoon news conference.

Selina Bishop and Helzer were seen together at a Berkeley restaurant the afternoon before the shooting.

''Right now we're talking to him about the whereabouts of Selina, because he was the last person to have seen her,'' Marin County Sheriff's Capt. Tom McMains said earlier.

McMains said he was not overly optimistic. ''I don't know where this will lead us. This case has got a lot of twists and turns, including some very surprising ones.''

Also arrested were Helzer's brother, Justin, 28, and friend Dawn Goldman, 26, for investigation of drug possession, Concord Police Lt. Paul Crain said Tuesday. All three are cooperating with Marin authorities, he said.

Helzer was supposed to go camping last week in Yosemite National Park with Selina Bishop, the daughter of blues guitarist Elvin Bishop, who's best known for his 1976 pop hit ''Fooled Around and Fell in Love.''

Bishop isn't commenting on his ex-wife's murder and daughter's disappearance, said Mike Grill, who works for Alligator Records in Chicago.

Mike Henderson, a former neighbor of Justin Helzer, told the San Francisco Chronicle he had seen Selina Bishop a month ago in Pleasant Hill and knew the Helzers were acquainted with the Bishop family.

The victims had been housesitting Selina Bishop's Woodacre studio apartment while she traveled to Yosemite. There is no indication she ever arrived.

Detectives said they have ruled out robbery as a motive for the slayings, but are convinced it wasn't a random crime. Another possibility is that Selina Bishop might have been the target, since she resembles her mother.

''We haven't ruled out anybody as a suspect,'' McMains said. ''The motive is still unclear.''
