Engine trouble forces Honolulu-bound flight back to San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO - A Honolulu-bound DC-10 made an emergency landing at San Francisco International airport Tuesday after pilots were forced to shut down one of its three engines in mid-flight.

American Airlines flight 39 left San Francisco shortly after 10 a.m. About an hour into the flight, a main engine died and pilots immediately turned the plane around, airport spokesman Ron Wilson said.

With emergency crews standing by, the plane landed without injury shortly after noon.

The 303 passengers were being rebooked on other flights. Wilson said airline officials were examining the plane to determine the cause of the engine failure.
