Federal funds awarded to deal with issue of domestic violence

Two Western Nevada agencies dedicated to helping the victims of domestic violence received $35,700 of $1.1 million in federal grants will be distributed statewide under the Stop Violence Against Women Act, Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa said Wednesday.

The Advocates to End Domestic Violence in Carson City received $19,000 to pay part of the salaries for a domestic violence victim advocate and a sexual assault response advocate.

The Family Support Council of Douglas Countyr received $16,700 to pay part of the cost of a case worker to help victims of domestic violence.

The funds are given to groups and organizations that specifically target coordination of statewide law enforcement and prosecution strategies to combat violent crimes against women.

Forty-five people - one-third of all people murdered in the state - were killed last year during domestic violence incidents.
