Fishing report for week of August 23

LAKE ALMANOR: No report.

BLUE LAKES (UPPER AND LOWER): Dave Kirby of the Woodfords General Store said that both Upper and Lower Blue Lakes continue to be good. Shore fishermen in front of the Lower Blue Lake campground limited out on both Saturday and Sunday, using Power Bait, floating off the bottom.

BOCA RESERVOIR: Dick "Father" Murphy of Fishing with Father Murphy advised fishermen to troll for Kokanee salmon in the middle of the reservoir at a depth of 25-35 feet. The best area is between the white cliffs and the east bank for Kokanee salmon.

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR: Andrew Sears of Ken's Sporting Goods Store reported, "Fishing has been ok, but not great. Best action has been for boaters still fishing on the bottom in Buckeye Bay. They are using nightcrawlers and there have been a couple of German browns in the 4.5 pound class."

CAPLES LAKE: Was stocked with 1,000 pounds of rainbow trout last week. Some fish were caught by boaters. A float tuber reported getting skunked by the dam.

CARSON RIVERS (EAST AND WEST) IN CALIF.: Dave Kirby of the Woodford's Station reported, "Good reports for both rivers. The two rivers are low and clear. The fish are very spooky. Successful fishermen had to work hard for their fish but they caught limits."

East Carson River: One angler caught and released a total of 6 rainbow trout in 2 hours with artificial salmon eggs and barbless hooks.

West Carson River: The largest rainbow reported was about 1.5 pounds.

CRATER LAKE (Near Kit Carson Pass): No report.

CONVICT LAKE AND CONVICT CREEK: David DeSurra of the Convict Lake Resort reported that it was a wonderful week for fishing the creek. The Calif. Fish and Game Hot Creek Hatchery stocked 20 rainbow trout (2-3 pounds) last Friday. This was in addition to the normal 400 pounds of regular sized rainbow planters.

Convict Lake: No report.

Convict Creek: The largest trout of the week were a 2.90 pound rainbow on a white Trout Teaser lure, a 2.20 pound rainbow on a gold Kastmaster lure and a 2.02 pound Calif. F&G rainbow on corn, plus a nice stringer of trout on Power Bait and eggs.

CROWLEY LAKE: No report.

DAVIS LAKE: No report.

EAGLE LAKE: No report.

Feather River: No report.

FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR: According to Wiggin's Trading Post at Chilcoot, Calif., "Fishermen have had to work for their fish this week. Fishing has slowed down. Go deep. Float nightcrawlers off the bottom. Trolling has been OK at Lunker Point using Woolly Bugger flies."

HEENAN LAKE: Closed until the Friday before Labor Day.

HOBART RESERVOIR: No report.

HOOVER WILDERNESS AREA: West of Bridgeport: West Lake was reporting good fishing for mostly Eastern brook and an occasional German brown from shore with Power Bait or from float tubes or inflatable rafts with assorted flies or small lures. East Lake was also reporting good fishing. Mostly small rainbows and Eastern brook from shore with Power Bait or from float tubes or inflatable rafts with assorted flies or small lures.

INDIAN CREEK RESERVOIR: Was reported as still being slow. One angler fished the top part of the water. He was using a bobber with a 5-6 foot long leader and Power Bait. He caught a 2.5 pound rainbow, plus three other smaller trout.

JUNE LAKE LOOP (GRANT-GULL-JUNE-SILVER LAKES-RUSH CREEK):

SACRAMENTO RIVER: According to Kirk Portocarrero of Redding. Calif.,

"Anderson: The Kings are here. They are at the Anderson area and Balls Ferry. Seeing limits some days, other days not. Salmon are ranging in size from 12 to 30 pounds. Using Flatfish lures with sardine wrap and bouncing roe. The river is at 10,000 C.F.S.

Redding to Anderson: Fishing for rainbow trout is good. 15-25 fish days. Spin and fly gear being used. Glo-Bugs, Wee-Warts and Flatfish lures are producing fish."

SILVER LAKE: No report.

SHASTA LAKE: No report.

SOUTH-NORTH-INTAKE 2-BISHOP CREEK (WEST OF BISHOP): Gary Olson of the Bishop Creek Resorts checked in with this report: "The weather is getting back to normal trends. the days are in the high 70's with the nights cooling down to the high 40's. It is spectacular."

South Lake: Trolling with Rapala lures is really bringing up some nice fish. A fast speed troll with a lot of action on the fishing rod has been best near the dam or by the rock slide area. Shore fishing from Boiler Cove has been great. Lots of limits using nightcrawlers or green Power Bait.

North Lake and Intake No. 2: One angler caught the top two fish, a 6-pound, 14-ounce Alper's rainbow trout and a 5-pound, 1-ounce Alper's, both on nightcawlers. Fishing has remained good at both lakes. Gold Kastmasters have done great. Nightcrawlers or red salmon eggs are catching lots of fish. The float tubers are really doing well in the centers of both lakes. They have been using olive Matukas or Woolly Bugger flies.

Sabrina Lake: Trolling has been the most popular. A lot of action with Rapala lures or with green Bead Head Woolly Bugger flies. Bait fishermen are scoring with rainbow Power Bait or nightcawlers.

Bishop Creek: Gold Kastmaster lures seem to be working the best. Some good action with Super Duper lures. Weir Pond is doing great with Royal Coachman and light Cahill or Caddis flies.

STAMPEDE RESERVOIR: Dick "Father" Murphy of "Fishing with Father Murphy" advised fishermen to troll at a depth of 40-50 feet from the boat ramp to the "big island" early in the morning and then later, to move to the front of the dam. The Kokanee salmon are running 1-1.5 pounds in the 15-16 inch class.

LAKE TAHOE - North Shore: Mickey Daniels of Mickey's Big Mack Charters reported, "Last Friday, Derek Steinnard, age 7, of Santa Rosa, Calif., caught an 11 pound rainbow trout. It was the largest rainbow that anyone has ever caught from one of my boats. He caught it at noon while we were trolling in 60 feet of water.

We're still catching nice Mackinaw trout on each trip, up to 7 pounds. We are tagging and releasing the smaller ones. We've been trolling 250-550 feet deep in the area in front of Carnelian Bay and King's Beach. We are using Herring Dodger flasher blades with either live minnows or pearl Apex lures."

LAKE TAHOE - SOUTH SHORE: Jack Martin of the Sportsmen's Sporting Goods Store at South Lake Tahoe checked in and said, "Fishing is great for Kokanee salmon all the way from Elk Point on the Nevada side to the mouth of Emerald Bay on the California side. Lots of limits. They are trolling 40-65 feet deep with Al Wilson flasher blades with an Imperial Magic spoon and a kernel of white corn. The best time is from 5:15 to 9 each morning.

TOPAZ LAKE: Chuck Fields of the Topaz Marina gave this report, "Fishing is terribly slow. The lake is down, the water is warm and there are lots of jet skis and water skiers. The lake level is still dropping but that is normal for this time of the year. All in all it is very quiet for the fishermen."

LOWER TWIN LAKE: No report.

UPPER TWIN LAKE: Jim Wilkins reported, "Fishing has slowed down because of the unusually warm weather. Most of the trout are being caught on Power Bait or nightcrawlers. The largest trout were a 5.25 pound rainbow on an Adams fly and a 4.5 pound rainbow taken on Power Bait. The winning trout in the Mono Village Fishing derby was a 3-pound, 13 ounce rainbow caught on a nightcrawler.

VIRGINIA LAKES AND VIRGINIA CREEK:

Virginia Lakes: No report.

WALKER LAKE: Bob Tompkins of the Walker Lake Guide Services said, "Trollers are averaging four fish per day per fisherman. The cutthroat weigh up to 5 pounds. The best area is in front of the "Cliffs," from 5 a.m. until about 10 a.m. They are trolling 30-45 feet deep with red/black dot or Chartreuse/red dot TOR-P-DO lures or with live Tui Chub minnows."

WALKER RIVERS (EAST-WEST-LITTLE):

East Walker River (Nev.): Bob Tompkins of the Walker Lake Guide Services reported, "The "Elbow" area continues to be good for rainbows and an occasional German brown on Panther-Martin or Roostertail lures or with Power Eggs or nightcrawlers."

East Walker River (Calif.): Was flowing at 280 C.F.S. Best for fly fishermen with Nymphs.

West Walker River (Nev.): No report.

West Walker River (Calif.): Continues to be good for everyone: bait fishermen, spincasters and fly fishermen. Lots of average sized trout. Everyone is catching fish.

Little Walker River: Good fishing for small rainbows and brookies on worms near Obsidian Campground.

WEBER RESERVOIR: Bob Tompkins of the Walker Lake Guide Services reported, "Fishing is at a dead halt right now due to the stench of dead fish. There are thousands and thousands of them. What a shame."

WILDHORSE RESERVOIR: Dennis Dunn of the Wildhorse Resort said, "Its hot, dry, windy and smoky here. Lots of fires around us but nothing close. The fishing is steady and above average for this time of the year. Lots of rainbows, smallmouth bass and perch. Everyone is coming is with fish. As a matter of interest, we have a 20-inch buck antelope hanging around the resort and he has almost become a pet."
