Fishing report for week of Oct. 11, 2000

Kokanee done at South Lake Tahoe


LAKE ALMANOR: Drift fishing for large German browns trout with crickets, mealworms or plastic jigs. Drifting about one foot off the bottom in 15-55 feet of water where streams come into the lake. Bass fishing is good around stumpy areas and rocky points. Fish are running up to 2.5 pounds.


LAKE ALPINE: No report.


BLUE LAKES (UPPER AND LOWER): Dave Kirby of the Woodfords General Store said the two lakes are still producing good fishing. Best results for anglers using inflated nightcrawlers or Power Bait, just off the bottom. A 2-pound rainbow was taken on worms on Sunday. Upper Blue Lake Campground is now restricted to Day Use only. The area had six inches of snow on Monday morning.


BOCA RESERVOIR: No report.


BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR: Jim Reid of Ken's Sporting Goods Store reported, "The reservoir is still low. It is still difficult to launch a boat but getting better, as the mud dries out. However, the fishing has been poor. We expect it to get better in the near future."


CAPLES LAKE: Fishing from shore at the near dam was good. Great fall colors.


CARSON RIVERS (EAST AND WEST) IN CALIF.: Dave Kirby of the Woodfords Station reported great fall colors.


East Carson: Was very low and clear. The fly fishermen were doing the best. They were using dry flies in the early mornings or after the sun went down. Bait fishermen were struggling to catch any fish.


West Carson: Was very low and clear. Plenty of fish in the Crystal Springs Campground area. The fly fishermen were doing the best in the mornings or after the sun went down. They were using dry flies. Bait fishermen were struggling to catch any fish.


CRATER LAKE (Near Kit Carson Pass): No report.


CONVICT LAKE AND CONVICT CREEK: David DeSurra of the Convict Lake Resort reported that Tim Alpers will be stocking 125 pounds of 5-10 pound trophy trout three times this month for a total of 375 pound of rainbows. The stocking dates are Oct. 6, 12 and 19.


Convict Lake: No report.


Convict Creek: No report.


CROWLEY LAKE: No report.


DAVIS LAKE: No report.


EAGLE LAKE: Dave Meserve of the Eagle Lake Marina said, "Still fishing continues to be the hot producer at Eagle Lake. Bobbers with nightcrawlers seems to be best. Jigs and Power Bait are close runners-up. Trollers were most productive last week by trolling flies, Rainbow Runners and Needlefish lures."


FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR: No report.


FROG LAKE: No report.


HEENAN LAKE: No report.


HOBART RESERVOIR: No report.


HOOVER WILDERNESS AREA: West of Bridgeport, Calif.:


West Lake was reporting good fishing for mostly Eastern brook and an occasional German brown from shore with Power Bait or from float tubes or inflatable rafts with assorted flies or small lures.


East Lake was also reporting good fishing. Mostly small rainbows and Eastern brook from shore with Power Bait or from float tubes or inflatable rafts with assorted flies or small lures.


INDIAN CREEK RESERVOIR: Rated fair. Still murky. Starting to get some fresh water from the little streams.


JUNE LAKE LOOP (GRANT-GULL-JUNE-SILVER LAKES-RUSH CREEK):


Grant Lake: Boaters were trolling 4-6 colors of leadcore line with Needlefish lures. Bait fishermen were using green or orange Power Bait.


Gull Lake: The biggest fish of the year was caught on Sept. 29. A 9-pounder on a red Crippled Herring lure. A number of 5-6 pounders were taken on red salmon eggs or nightcrawlers. Trout were also being caught with Thomas Buoyant or Crocodile lures.


June Lake: Good fishing. Rapala, Thomas Buoyant or Super Duper lures were taking 6-7 pounders. Best in the mornings. Using nightcrawlers in the reed areas.


Silver Lake: Report of 2-6 pounders caught from shore with Sierra Gold, Rapala lures or Woolly Bugger flies.


Rush Creek: Report of 2-pounders taken on red salmon eggs.


KIRMAN (CARMEN) LAKE: Jim Reid of Ken's Sporting Goods Store reported he fished Kirman the other day and it is red hot right now. He caught and released about 18 Eastern brook trout, up to 19 inches. He said that he missed about 5 trout for each of the 18 brookies that he caught. The best action was with Stillwater Nymphs flies or bead head Scud flies from his float tube. Shore fishermen were also doing very well."


KENNEY RESERVOIR: No report.


LAHONTAN RESERVOIR: No report.


LUNDY LAKE: No report.


MAMMOTH LAKES AREA:


George Lake: Red/gold Thomas Buoyant or Super Duper or gold Kastmaster lures or orange Power Bait or nightcrawlers or green or olive Woolly Bugger flies were working the best.


Mamie Lake: Being drained. No report.


Mary Lake: Red/gold Thomas Buoyant lures or rainbow, yellow or orange Power Bait or nightcrawlers or No. 7 or No. 9 Rapala lures were working the best.


Twin Lakes: Closed. No bait fishing.


Mammoth Creek: Best for Trout Teaser lures or small spinners or red salmon eggs or worms.


MARKLEEVILLE CREEK: No report.


NORTH POND: No report.


OWENS RIVER:


Benton Crossing (Up): Best action with small spinners or Roostertail lures or Panther/Martin lures or olive bead head Matuka flies.


Benton Crossing (Down): Best for nightcrawlers or Trout Teaser lures or small spinners or rainbow Rapala lures.


POORE-SECRET-ROOSEVELT-LANE LAKES: No report.


PYRAMID LAKE: No report.


RED LAKE: No report.


SACRAMENTO RIVER: According to Kirk Portocarrero of Redding. Calif.,


Anderson: Anglers putting in full days. They are picking up a few, but large fish. River is at 6,300 C.F.S. Salmon are ranging in size from 18 to 35 pounds. Boaters are using Flatfish lures wrapped with sardines and bouncing roe.


Redding to Anderson: Fishing for rainbow trout is productive most days. Early mornings is the best. Anglers are catching 10-20 fish per day. Spin and fly gear being used. Glo-Bugs, Wee Warts and Flatfish lures are producing fish.


SILVER LAKE: No report.


SHASTA LAKE: Trollers were catching good numbers of rainbows, averaging 16 inches, with some fish up to four pounds, in 10-70 feet of water. Waters Gulch, Toupee Island, Ski Island, the Dam and Dry Creek were all producing fish. Shad imitations like Crippled Herring or Hum Dingers in silver, purple or blue behind Sling Blade dodgers were working the best. Some salmon in the 3-4 pound class were being caught in deeper water, 70-125 feet.


SOUTH-NORTH-INTAKE 2-SABRINA-BISHOP CREEK (WEST OF BISHOP): Gary Olson of the Bishop Creek Resorts checked in with this report, "The big event this week is the changing of the colors. It is peaking right now and is heading for spectacular next week."


North and Intake No. 2 Lakes: The largest trout was a 3-pound, 6-ounce Alpers rainbow at Intake No. 2 with a Thomas Buoyant lure.


Sabrina Lake: Fishing was great with salmon eggs or nightcrawlers. Several trollers did well with flasher blades and nightcrawlers.


South Lake: The largest trout was an 8-pounder nailed by a troller with a flasher blade and a nightcrawler. Also caught were a 5-pound, 2-ounce Alpers with a yellow Roostertail lure and a 4-pound, 14-ounce Alpers with a Mini-Jig.


Bishop Creek: Both Fish and Game and Alpers stocked this week so the fishing has been phenomenal. Lots of limits coming in with salmon eggs or nightcrawlers.


Weir Pond: Good action for fly anglers with Royal Coachmen and black ant flies.


STAMPEDE RESERVOIR: No report.


LAKE TAHOE - North Shore: Mickey Daniels of Mickey's Big Mack Charters reported, "We're catching mostly Mackinaw trout with an occasional rainbow. The Macks are running up to about 10 pounds. We are tagging and releasing the smaller ones. We've been trolling 250-550 feet deep in the area in front of Carnelian Bay and King's Beach. We are using Herring Dodger flasher blades with either live minnows or pearl Apex lures."


LAKE TAHOE - SOUTH SHORE: Mike Nielsen of the Tahoe Topliners at South Lake Tahoe said, "Kokanee salmon fishing is about done for now. The Kokanee are spawning in Taylor Creek. Mackinaw fishing continues to stay good. The best action is by jigging in 150 feet of water with blue/silver or white Crippled Herring lures. The Macks are running 3-7 pounds. The are being caught all the way from The Tahoe Keys to the casinos."


TOPAZ LAKE: Closed until Jan. 1.


LOWER TWIN LAKE: No report.


UPPER TWIN LAKE: Jim Wilkins reported, "More pond raised German browns, 3-7 pounds, were planted this week by Mono Village in addition to the weekly plants by Fish and Game. The fishing has been great this past week. One angler caught two rainbows that had a combined weight of 9-pounds. He was casting from shore with a Super Duper and a Crocodile lure. Another angler used olive Woolly Bugger flies to catch a 5-pound, 9-ounce and a 4-pound, 10-ounce rainbow while trolling.


VIRGINIA LAKES AND VIRGINIA CREEK:


Virginia Lakes: No report.


Virginia Creek: No report.


WALKER LAKE: Bob Tompkins of the Walker Lake Guide Services said, "Boaters are still catching fish. Especially those boaters trolling down toward The Cliff House. They are trolling about 25-30 feet deep in 50 feet of water. They are using green Tor-P-Do, Yo-Zouri, Rapala and Flatfish lures or live minnows to catch lots of cutthroat, up to about 3 pounds."


WALKER RIVERS (EAST-WEST-LITTLE):


East Walker River (Nev.): Bob Tompkins of the Walker Lake Guide Services reported, "The "Elbow" area is good for rainbows and an occasional German brown on Panther-Martin or Roostertail lures or with Power Eggs or nightcrawlers."


East Walker River (Calif.): Continues to be great fishing. Flowing at 140 C.F.S. Best for "Fly Guys" using Nymphs or streamers.


West Walker River (Nev.): No report.


West Walker River (Calif.): Low and clear. Continues to be good for bait fishermen, spincasters and flycasters. Lots of average sized trout. Best with salmon eggs, nightcrawlers,small spinners or mosquito flies.


Little Walker River: Low and clear. Good fishing for small rainbows and brookies on worms near the U.S.F.S. Obsidian Campground.


WEBER RESERVOIR: Bob Tompkins of the Walker Lake Guide Services reported, "Access to the reservoir is now open but check on current fishing conditions and restrictions at the Schurz Smoke Shop on U.S. 95."


WILDHORSE RESERVOIR: Dennis Dunn of the Wildhorse Resort said, "It is cloudy and rainy. The fishing is still good for both shore and boat fishermen. The trout are running up to 20 inches. They have stopped hitting Power Bait and are hitting on worms only.


WINNEMUCCA LAKE: No report.


YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK: No report.
