Ryan Thornton and Chris Ferguson-McIntyre almost gave the Galena boys tennis team its second title in two days at the NIAA/U.S. Bank 4-A State Championships.
Thornton and McIntyre defeated teammates Kevin Tappan and Eric Lissy 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the finals Saturday in Reno. Thornton and McIntyre then lost a three-set match 6-4, 2-6, 3-6 to Manogue's Rolf Sievers and Josh Codding. in the finals. Tappan and Lissy settled for fourth after losing in the third place match 2-6, 3-6 to Bonanza's Chris Hubbard and Jimmie Greathouse. On Friday, Galena defeated Bonanza to win the state team title.
