GENOA - Genoans will gather this weekend to raise money to fight a controversial Genoa development at the corner of Nixon Street and Jacks Valley Road.
The gathering will fund Support Historic Genoa's lawsuit against Douglas County, which is scheduled for a Sept. 21 hearing before Judge Dave Gamble.
The suit seeks to reverse Douglas County's decision to approve a 12,280-square-foot structure that would house 10 hotel rooms and seven retail shops, overriding the Genoa Historic District's conditions for the project.
The fund-raiser will be held in the garden of the Randy and Betsy Falcke "Orchard House" home in Genoa Saturday from 3 to 5:30 p.m.
The public is invited to "Taste of Genoa," with all proceeds helping to defray the costs of Support Historic Genoa's legal effort to establish that the town has legal protection as a nationally recognized historic district.
The gala event, titled "Taste of Genoa," will feature a variety of wines, hors d' oeuvres and food speciality items donated by the area's leading restaurants. In addition to enjoying food, wine and soft drinks, participants will have the opportunity to bid for outstanding items and events at a silent auction.
Restaurants providing signature samplings of their specialties will be La Ferme, Inn Cognito, Sierra Nevada Golf Ranch and the Genoa Country Store.
Among auction attractions will be dinner for two at the Franktown Grill at Thunder Canyon Golf Club (formerly Lightning W); one night's stay and breakfast at the Genoa House Inn or The Wild Rose Inn bed-and-breakfast in Genoa; one night's lodging and/or dinner at Sorensens Resort in Hope Valley; and a golf round, cart and breakfast or lunch at the Sierra Nevada Golf Ranch. Also up for auction will be original paintings, rare wines, a glider flight donated by High Country Soaring, and a host of gifts and services.
Cost of admittance to "Taste of Genoa" will be $20 per person if reservations are made by Sept. 2, and $35 per person at the gate of the Falcke residence at 188 Carson St., Genoa. Children are not invited. Reservations may be made by calling 783-9841 or 782-7809; and tickets may be purchased at the Genoa Country Store, 782-5974; the Genoa Gallery and Coffee Co., 783-1178, and at the Mill Creek Gallery, 782-7809.
Gamble has scheduled a hearing on Support Historic Genoa's suit at 9 a.m., Sept. 21.
