Gov. Kenny Guinn has issued a proclamation honoring the hundreds of firefighters and volunteers who continue to battle wildfires burning throughout the state.
So far, almost half a million acres in Nevada have been charred.
"I think it's important to recognize the efforts and the sacrifices of all those who have worked so hard to protect the lives and property of those put in danger by this season's wildfires," Gov. Guinn said. "Every firefighter and every volunteer deserves our heartfelt thanks and admiration."
State agencies involved in the firefighting efforts include the Nevada Division of Forestry, Emergency Management, Wildlife, Agriculture and the National Guard. These state agencies have and will continue to coordinate their efforts with local and federal agencies.
"Containing fires this year is especially difficult because some of our neighboring states are also faced with huge wildfires, making resources scarce," Guinn said. "We have been able to minimize damage largely due to the dedication of firefighters and hard work of volunteers."
Earlier this month, Guinn also approved an extension for the registration deadline at Nevada's universities and community colleges for those students and potential students who were serving as volunteer firefighters.
