A free, 5-hour hike to the top of Hawkin's Peak (10,000') is being offered on Sunday, weather permitting.
That hike will be led by park rangers with the California State Park System.
Hawkin's Peak is located in the Hope Valley area of Alpine County. Hope Valley is about 35 miles south of Carson City, via U.S. 395, Nev. S.R. 88 and Calif. S.R. 88.
The 4-5 mile (one-way) trek is rated as "moderately difficult."
It will begin with a carpool at 9:30 a.m. in the parking area at Picketts Junction. That junction is at the intersection of Calif. S.R. 88 (to Kit Carson Pass) and Calif. S.R. 89 (to Luther Pass) on the north edge of Hope Valley.
Participants are requested to wear layered clothing for variable weather conditions and bring a lunch and drinks.
For information, call the Park Ranger at Grover Hot Springs State Park at (530) 694-2248 during business hours.
