Letter: Job doesn't preclude full-service mayor

I have been studying the campaigns for Carson City mayor carefully, through the debates and printed material, and it seems that Mayor Masayko's main platform for re-election is that he can be a full-time mayor and Tom Tatro cannot.

As I see it, this is not an issue. First of all, the city charter calls for a part-time mayor and full-time city manager. But besides that fact, I am living proof that a person can successfully manage two jobs at the same time.

For three years, I served as the executive board administrative assistant for the Carson City School District and maintained an active real estate practice (in 1999 I tied for the top producer for buyer controlled transactions at National Best Sellers). In addition to this, I also served as president of Soroptimist, which was very rewarding but time-consuming.

I am not writing this to toot my own horn but rather to illustrate how a person can be committed to two or more endeavors and not let any suffer. Tatro can easily handle his job as fiscal manager at the Department of Motor Vehicles and lead our community as Carson City's mayor. In fact, many of his mayoral duties will benefit from his expertise in financial matters. He is a proven leader with nine years on the Board of Supervisors, successfully done while working another job.

When you are voting, consider the truth in the old adage: If you want something done, ask a busy person. When you look at the movers and shakers in our community, from the civic organizations to the Boys & Girls Club Board to the Chamber of Commerce to American Cancer Society, just about everybody is working full-time and then volunteering a lot of hours to make our community a better place to live.

I want a mayor who knows all aspects of our community, from being employed in Carson City (DMV fiscal manager) to knowing about local education (Tom attended Carson High, WNCC, and UNR and his two boys graduated from Carson High), to understanding how our government works (member of Board of Supervisors, Redevelopment Authority, Regional Planning Commission, Parks and Recreation Commission) to being committed to our community by way of civic involvement (Boys & Girls Club Board of Directors, American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) Board of Directors, Governor's United Way Cabinet).

Tom Tatro is the best choice for mayor.
