Letter: Sharing works in the swimming pool, too

I was amused by Jane Smith's letter of complaint regarding the availability of water space for her lap swimming. She says, "two lanes for several adults is not enough room to swim." I am always amazed at adults' attitudes in this matter.

When our youngsters are doing training as competitive swimmers, they manage to share a lane with many other people to do their lap swimming. They seem to learn early on the rules of etiquette about sharing space, how to stay to the right side of the lane, how to pass, letting to other person go ahead, etc. At a swim meet there will be dozens of kids swimming laps in a single lane for warm-ups.

As far as availability of the facility to taxpayers, the very people she is complaining about are also taxpayers, enjoying their beautifully renovated aquatic facility. They too are purchasing their "passes" for swim lessons, water play at camp, and competitive training. I might remind Ms. Smith that there are two swimmers from our small community who are going to the Olympic trials in August, who have trained at our pool.

My compliments to all the people who live the rules they learned in kindergarten, that sharing and a little give and take is the way to get along together in this world.
