Mammovan for breast exams comes to Carson City Oct. 17

October is National Mammography Month and Nevada Rural Health Centers, Inc. is encouraging all women age 40 and over to get a mammogram. Nevada Rural Health Centers, Inc. is a nonprofit community health center the operates the Mammovan for Nevada project. Thanks to a grant from the Northern Nevada Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the Mammovan is able to serve all women over 40.

Breast cancer is the leading cancer diagnosed in women in America. This year, more than 175,000 women will learn for the first time that they have this disease and more than 43,000 women will lose their lives. However, when breast cancer is detected early and treated promptly, suffering and ultimately the loss of life can be significantly reduced.

The Mammovan will be in Reno Oct. 9-13. It will be parked at Shoppers Square on Plumb Lane on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and will be parked at The Boys and Girls Club on Ninth Street on Thursday and Friday. Appointments are required.

The van will be in Carson City at the Ron Wood Family Resource Center Oct. 17. To make an appointment for a mammogram call toll free 1-877-581-6266. The Mammovan for Nevada will have a Physician Assistant on board who can also perform a clinical breast exam and Pap smear if needed. You do not have to have a physician referral for the mammogram. Osteoporosis screening is also available.
