SANTA ANA, Calif. - After pleading innocent to charges of threatening to kill ''Valley Girl'' singer Moon Zappa, a Tustin man was sent to the psychiatric unit of a federal detention center.

Timothy Mark Brownfield has been diagnosed with depression and paranoid schizophrenia, according to Deputy Public Defender Elizabeth Macias, who said her client needs a psychiatrist to review the doses of the several medications he takes ''to see if they need adjustment.''

Federal Magistrate Arthur Nakazato agreed to have Brownfield, 40, moved from the Santa Ana Jail to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles.

Brownfield is accused of threatening to kill Zappa in documents he mailed to the FBI's Santa Ana office on Oct. 30. Zappa did not personally receive any mail from Brownfield.

Brownfield wrote that he was angry with Zappa and her late father, Frank Zappa, for allegedly stealing the lyrics to ''Valley Girl'' from him. The 1982 hit single parodied the ''fer shure, fer shure'' lingo and mall shopping habits of teen-age girls in the San Fernando Valley.

A federal grand jury indicted Brownfield Wednesday on a count of mailing a threatening communication. He could face up to five years in prison if convicted.

Brownfield's trial is scheduled to begin Jan. 30 before U.S. District Judge Alicemarie Stotler.
