Forget American Movie Classics or driving to that deco theater in the city - film buffs can savor the work of Chaplin, Welles, and Hitchock starting Wednesday as the Nevada State Railroad Museum begins its outdoor movie series.
This summer's theme is "Under Nevada Skies" and will start with the 1946 Roy Rogers movie of the same name. The films, free to the public, will be shown Wednesday evenings beginning at dusk through Aug. 23 in the park north of the main museum building.
People may bring lawn chairs, blankets, and picnics, and there's usually plenty of room, said John Frink, program coordinator.
"We try to get movies that have our trains in it, or that were filmed in Nevada," said Frink, who puts together a list of films for consideration each year. Last year The Iron Horse, a silent, featured the museum's own restored iron horse, The Inyo. Also shown was John Wayne's last movie, The Shootist, filmed in Carson City.
"We usually have one silent film each year. In the past, we've gotten a piano player to come down and play," said Frink. This year's silent will be The Gold Rush, one of Chaplin's greatest, which was filmed in Truckee.
The following films are scheduled:
Under Nevada Skies - Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, 1946
Duel In the Sun - Jennifer Jones, Gregory Peck, Joseph Cotten, 1946
War of the Worlds - Gene Barry, Ann Robinson, 1953
The Gold Rush (silent) - Charlie Chaplin, Georgia Hale, Mack Swain
Citizen Kane - Orson Welles, Joseph Cotten, 1941
Toy Story - Disney animated film
The Man Who Knew Too Much - James Stewart, Doris Day, 1956
