'No weapons' sign won't deter criminals

With regards to the recent sign controversy at the library, I am very concerned that in their desire to provide a safe place for their patrons the directors of public entities and business owners as well may be doing exactly the opposite!

It is generally accepted that legally carried concealed weapons pose no threat to society and are frequently used to deter or stop crimes in progress where police are not immediately available. Everyone who has a concealed weapons permit in Nevada has been required to pass a proficiency test and a background investigation.

Posting a sign saying weapons are not allowed will affect only these law-abiding citizens, not the untrained person carrying an illegal weapon who is already breaking the law! By placing that sign you have assured the person(s) bent on harming your patrons that there will be no one there to stop them. As you also know, no location is safe from this behavior. Before anyone posts such a sign, they should consider that they might be potentially doing their patrons more harm than good.
