Obituary: Bryan Layton Harris

A service for Bryan Layton Harris, 81, a Carson City resident for the past 46 years, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the C Hill Building of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on McKay Drive.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Walton's Chapel of the Valley.

Mr. Harris died July 29, 2000, at Carson-Tahoe Hospital. He was born March 11, 1919, in Layton, Utah, to Thomas Jesse and Chloe Louise Layton Harris.

He attended Utah State Agricultural College in Logan, Utah, and graduated as an agricultural economist in 1941. He began his career with the Bureau of Reclamation in Salt Lake City and Ogden, Utah, and was transferred to Nevada in 1951 to help plan reclamation projects along the Truckee River.

Mr. Harris was a veteran of World War II. He served in the United States Air Force in the South Pacific.

He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served twice as bishop of the Carson City First Ward. He also served on the Reno Stake High Council for seven years and as stake executive secretary for the Carson City Stake. He and his wife fulfilled a mission for the church to the New York City Mission in 1975.

He enjoyed singing and was a member of the Sierra Singers, a male chorus from the Reno/Carson area, which represented the state of Nevada at the Seattle World's Fair in 1964. He sang in barbershop quartets and presided as president of the Chorus of the Comstock when it was chartered by the national SPEBSQA. He also sang for many years in his church choir. He enjoyed gardening, hunting and traveling.

Among his survivors are his wife of 51 years, Elaine of Carson City; daughters Pamela Gilbert of Othello, Wash., Margo Leatham of Carson City and Laurie Ball of Chandler, Ariz.; six sisters all of Utah; 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Interment will be at Lone Mountain Cemetery.

Walton's Chapel of the Valley, Crematory and Cemetery is in charge of arrangements.
