Obituary: Dr. Richard D. Grundy

A memorial service for Dr. Richard D. Grundy, 72, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church followed by a reception in the church social hall.

Dr. Grundy died Dec. 8, 2000 after a long illness. He was born June 13, 1928, in Oklahoma City, Okla., to June Leo and Walter A. Grundy.

He married Nancy Brown in Rawson, Ohio, in 1955.

He graduated from Baylor University Medical School in Houston, Texas, and served an internship at John Peter Smith in Fort Worth.

Dr. Grundy and his family moved to Carson City in 1959 and he entered practice. . He practiced family medicine until 1975, when he helped establish the Carson-Tahoe Hospital Emergency Physician's Group.

He was active in training emergency medical technicians in Carson City, Douglas County and Alpine County. He was chief of staff at Carson-Tahoe Hospital for three terms and he was the director of the critical care unit at the hospital for seven years. In 1968, he was appointed to the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners and served for 13 years, seven years of which he was president of the board.

He was a member of the Rotary Club of Carson City for 41 years and was its president from 1965-66. In 1968 he began a series of part-time administrative positions with the state medical insurance systems and the public employees' retirement system. He received the Nevada Distinguished Physician Award from the Nevada State Medical Association in 1994.

Among his survivors are his brother George of Oklahoma City; sister Dorothea G. Petrie of Los Angeles; wife Nancy; son Thomas of McKinleyville, Calif.; daughters Susan Grundy Ledoux of Green Valley, Calif., Anne Carvalho of Sacramento, Calif.; grandchildren Anthony and Gabrielle Carvalho and many nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church building fund or to a favorite charity.
