Youths are successful in buying tobacco products once in every five attempts despite laws mandating they be at least 18 years old.

Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa said Wednesday Nevada's success rate of 22.2 percent is far less than the 63 percent rate in 1994 before her office began conducting stings on tobacco sellers.

Nevada's rate is also below the national rate of 24.4 percent in 1999.

"Working closely with retailers and others, we have made great improvements in reducing the accessibility of tobacco to our state's children," she said.
