SAN DIEGO (AP) - Police have arrested the grandfather of a 3-year-old boy who died after being shot in the chest.
J.C. Carraway, 74, was arrested for investigation of murder even though police had yet to determine how the boy was shot, San Diego police Lt. Jim Duncan said Tuesday.
Police initially believed the boy, who was visiting his grandfather's house with his mother, may have accidentally shot himself. But that changed after Carraway gave ''deceptive answers'' to investigators, Duncan said.
''His less than candid responses indicated there was more involvement on his part than originally thought,'' he said.
Paramedics and police went to the home around 8:00 a.m. Monday after neighbors heard a gunshot and saw the boy's mother run out of the house cradling her son.
The boy, whose identity was not immediately released, was pronounced dead at Children's Hospital.
Several weapons were found at the home, including a revolver that police believe was the one that killed the boy. An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday.
