Carson High School wrestlers Justin Sarnowski and Doug Brooks continued on their December roll by sweeping to gold medals in their respective weight classes Saturday at the Silverado Invitational in Las Vegas.
Sarnowski won the 135-pound weight class and Brooks won at 140 pounds to help the Senators finish eighth overall in the 24-team tournament. The two seniors now boast 14-0 season records and are obviously the anchors of Carson's lineup.
"They're both real solid. That's a nice one-two punch to have in the middle of the lineup," coach Tim McCarthy said.
Sarnowski earned his title with a 5-2 triumph against Jared Padilla of Eldorado (Las Vegas) in a showdown between wrestlers who last season were 130-pound champions in their respective Northern and Southern 4A zone tournaments.
Meanwhile, Brooks scored a 7-2 decision in his final against Israel Ibarra of Santa Cruz Valley (Eloy, Ariz.).
Carson had four other place finishers in the tournament: Josh Aguilar, who is making a comeback after missing the 1999-2000 season with a knee injury, placed sixth at 171 pounds; freshman Joe Roman was sixth at 125 pounds; Chris Kotter eighth at 160 pounds; and freshman Ricky Adams eighth at 103 pounds.
Carson scored 120-1/2 points to finish eighth in the team standings. Las Vegas High won the team title by a 168-164 margin over Warren High (Downey, Calif.).
The Senators return to their Northern 4A schedule Wednesday with a conference dual meet at South Tahoe.
