Second suspected robber pleads innocent

A second suspect in the home invasion and holdup of a Carson City family pleaded innocent Monday and will join at least one of his codefendants in a trial scheduled for May.

Alfonso Segura-Ramirez, 20, is charged with felony burglary with a gun, three counts of robbery with a gun and principle to robbery with a gun. If convicted, the maximum sentence that could be handed down by Judge Michael Griffin is 255 years.

Segura-Ramirez joins 32-year-old Juan Silverio Garcia-Medina, who pleaded innocent last week to the same charges. Along with Jose Garcia-Lopez, 34, the two are suspected of breaking into a home July 31 and holding a family at gunpoint before robbing them of money and jewelry. Garcia-Lopez has not been formally arraigned on the charges.

The three men were arrested at a home in the 400 block of East Long Street after police received a call of a gunshot in the area.

Upon arrival, police were met by a screaming woman, who indicated that three men - who had broken into the home through a bathroom window - were still inside.

Without the help of backup officers, two patrolmen yelled for the men to come outside and, when there was no response, they entered the front door. One of the suspects was reportedly lying on a couch pretending to sleep, while the other two emerged from another room.

A fourth man, Javier Martinez, lay unconscious on the ground, bleeding from the head. The man received medical aid for a wound believed to be caused when Garcia-Lopez struck him on the head with a pistol. Three 9 mm pistols were found under a couch cushion.

According to court documents, the three men entered the home, rounded up three men, two children and three children, and demanded cash and jewelry at gunpoint. The gunshot is believed to have discharged when Javier Martinez was struck. A bullet hole was found in the ceiling.

Angelica Martinez, visiting from Los Angeles with her family, testified at a preliminary hearing that "they all had guns," and that one of the men pointed a gun at her and said "You either give me the money, or I take the children."

The homeowner knew one of the intruders, according to reports. Testimony indicates that the suspected robbers knew that the man owns a Carson City store that sells clothing and jewelry.

When the men were searched, police found jewelry and cash in their possession, reports state.
