Slower speeds on the way for roundabout

Neighborhood requests to lower the approach speeds to the roundabout at Fifth Street and Edmonds Drive will be honored, a city official said.

Northbound Edmonds, which approaches the roundabout downhill, has had its speed limit dropped from 45 mph to 35 mph, said city streets superintendent John Flansberg.

Eastbound Fifth has a 40-mph limit but the other two approaches are posted at 35 mph, the desired limit to drive into the roundabout. Inside the roundabout, the ideal speed is 15 mph.

"We're working to make all legs come in at 35 mph," Flansberg told the Carson City Board of Supervisors on Thursday.

Flashing warning lights will also be added to the east and west approaches to join those already in place in the north-south direction.

Flansberg said the downhill pavement on Edmonds will be removed and replaced because truck traffic has rutted the road. Road work will be done when traffic is lightest, he said.

All these changes came about from suggestions made during neighborhood meetings while the permanent roundabout was under construction.
