ALLIANCE, Ohio (AP) - A minor earthquake shook northeastern Ohio, in an area where no quake had been felt in more than a century. No damage was reported.
The tremor late Sunday measured about magnitude 2.8 on a scale on which damage doesn't occur until magnitudes above 4, said Bruce Presgrave, a geophysicist with the National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colo.
He said it was detected by seismology stations in Ohio, Indiana, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.
Police Sgt. T.J. Seymour was in a patrol car and compared the tremor to driving over a small speed bump. ''Maybe that's a bit dramatic,'' he said.
The only previous quake on record in the area was centered about 20 miles away in 1885, said Mike Hansen, a senior geologist with the Ohio Seismic Network. Overall, however, Ohio has had at least 120 earthquakes resulting in damage and injuries since the Revolutionary War.
Alliance is about 50 miles southeast of Cleveland.
