The American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday, hoping to end an alleged Nevada Department of Prison policy that prevents inmates from receiving the Prison Legal News.
The ACLU said the publication - which boasts a national circulation of 3,500 - has been withheld from inmates in some Nevada correctional facilities.
Nevada Department of Prison Spokesman Glen Wharton said he has not heard of the lawsuit, but said the department policy is not to comment on pending litigation.
According to the civil rights group, systematic refusal of delivery of the monthly journal is a violation of free speech guarantees. It says copies of the publication have been confiscated and discarded.
Prison Legal News features news and analysis of issues in correctional institutions.
The lawsuit was filed in the Federal District Court in Reno.
