State jobless rate 3.7 percent in August, just over 1 million working

CARSON CITY - The state's unemployment rate was 3.7 percent in August, with 39,200 Nevadans out of work and just over 1 million holding jobs.

A Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation report Friday notes the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate, up from 3.5 percent in July, compares with a national August rate of 4.1 percent and a 5.1 percent rate in neighboring California.

August unemployment in the metropolitan Las Vegas area was 4.2 percent, up from 4.1 percent in July. In the Reno area, the rate was 2.7 percent in August, up from 2.6 percent a month earlier.

August unemployment was 3.6 percent in the Elko-Eureka areas and 3.9 percent in Carson-Douglas-Lyon-Storey areas.

Month-to-month unemployment comparisons weren't available for other Nevada counties.

Statewide, mining was steady between July and August; finance-insurance-real estate jobs were up 200; manufacturing was up 100; transportation-utilities was up 300; trade was up 2,300; the casino-related service industry was up 5,700; and government hiring was down 500.
