Think of it as souvenir from tahoe.com. Tahoe Carson Area Newspapers, which operates six regional newspapers and two Web sites, has launched a free e-mail service that gives people e-mail addresses: @tahoe.com or @reno.com.

"We thought this would be a great way to tell people where you're writing from," said Paul Keen, interactive media director for TCAN. "We think of it as a kind of souvenir, a gift from us to our Web browsers and newspaper readers."

Tahoe.com e-mail was launched two weeks ago, according to Keen. Reno.com e-mail will be launched by the end of the month, he added.

In addition to an e-mail address, the free service offers features such as a calendar and address book. Here's how it works:

1. Log onto the Internet at www.tahoe.com

2. On the tahoe.com page, double-click on "Get your free tahoe.com e-mail."

3. Scroll down to the "new users" area.

4. Type in an e-mail name of your choice.

5. Click on "signup."

6. Choose a password and answer general information questions.

7. Congratulations. You now have an e-mail address @tahoe.com.

An announcement will be made when the service is available at reno.com, for those who prefer to have Reno as their e-mail address.
