United Blood Services experiences shortage

United Blood Services is calling for donors to help alleviate Northern Nevada's blood supply shortage which has reached critical levels, according to Nyla Emerson, community relations representative.

"We need all types right now. We have to generate 150 units per day to supply local hospitals," she said. "But this year the colds and flu are hanging on, and people can't donate blood when they're sick. I need anyone that's well to re-think their schedule."

She said donations dropped early this year right after Thanksgiving, and many don't take the time to donate once the holiday parties start. The shortage is compounded by the increased number of year-end surgeries and holiday highway accidents.

"Right now, we have less than a day's supply on hand," Emerson said. "It truly is a matter of life."

The second-largest blood provider in the United States, United Blood Services supplies a 122,000-square-mile area in Northern Nevada, Northern California, and the Eastern Sierra, including Bishop and Mammoth to the south, Winnemucca, Elko, and Lovelock to the east, and Lake Tahoe, Susanville, Quincy to the north.
