University of Nevada, Reno assistant professor of history Hugh Shapiro was awarded the prestigious 2000 Li-Qing history of Chinese Science prize for an article published in the journal, "Positions, East Asia Cultures Critique."
Shapiro's article analyzes the experience of disease as a way to explain the cultural transformation of early 20th century China. The institute of History at the National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan awards the prize annually for the best article on Chinese science or medicine published within the past five years by a scholar under the age of 40. Shapiro received the prize, which carries a $2,500 award, in Taipei, Taiwan in June. Shapiro is also the recipient of the F. Donald Tibbits Distinguished Teaching Award, the university's top teaching honor. In addition, he has earned numerous fellowships to study language and history in China and East Asia.
