Well known runners win at Cross Country Cup

Two names well known by Northern Nevada's running community turned up as the overall winners during Cross Country Cup 2000 on Saturday morning.

Not only that, but two names with connections to men's distance running at the University of Nevada.

Tim Minor, a standout at Nevada in the 1970s, ran to first-place in the 10-kilometer cross country race at Silver Oak Golf Course. And the overall 5-K winner was Ron Tibaduiza, whose father, Domingo, another Nevada star during the '70s and a four-time Olympian for Colombia.

Overall, the Carson City Striders-sponsored event attracted nearly 150 runners and walkers, ranging in age from 6-year-old Peter Brinson to 73 years young Boyce Jacques.

Tibaduiza, a state 3,200-meter track champion at Wooster High School in 1998 and now preparing to run for Fresno State University, won the 5K in 17:34. Brett Ferrier, a senior at Lowry High, was second in 18:16. Daryl Nourse of Carson City was fourth 19:17, while Andrew Pederson finished fifth and Jeffrey Martin sixth with respective times of 20:54 and 20:55.

Shanna Sparks of the Carson City Striders was fastest among the women with a 21:26 clocking. Annie Brinson, another Strider, was second in 23:30.

Minor, a nationally ranked masters runner, toured the challenging double loop 10-K (6.2 miles) course - which included soft sand as well as a climb from the golf course up to the old V&T Railroad grade - in a time of 37 minutes, 59 seconds.

Augustine Arroy was second in 40:48 and Incline High School cross country coach Bill Devine was third in 41:50. Dennis Pederson of Carson City was fifth overall and first in the men's 50-59 age group in 43:36.

Lynice Anderson of Reno earned top honors among the women. Anderson finished in 46:00. Deb Devine of Incline Village was second in 48:48.
