Albertson's Food & Drug Center is planning to locate a third Carson City store on North Carson Street in SuperKmart territory.
The new 63,000-square-foot grocery store and six-pump gas station is proposed for the corner of College Parkway and North Carson Street.
The location would put the Albertson's store in competition with SuperKmart's grocery store and a 7-Eleven gas station on the opposite corner.
The store is being designed to sit on a 6.5-acre site. A special use permit for the building will be forwarded to the Regional Planning Commission on Feb. 23.
Carol Dotson, director of planning for local engineering firm Lumos & Associates, wrote in the special use permit application that the store would "allow Albertson's the opportunity to supply grocery service to the north Carson City area and the surrounding residents of Silver Oak, Timberline, Lakeview and subdivisions to the east."
Project Engineer Glen Martel of Lumos & Associates said Albertson's is planning to break ground on the store sometime this summer.
The site was selected for its proximity to the future freeway.
"I think they recognize the nice potential of the property," Martel said. "There will be an interchange at Arrowhead and, of course, the College Parkway Interchange. The north area will continue to be developed."
The store's design includes 48,750 square feet of landscaping and 358 parking spaces.
Albertson's had 1,002 stores in 25 states as of July 1999. It is headquartered in Boise, Idaho.
