Ice fishermen are advised to be very cautious when venturing out onto the surface of local lakes due to the uncertainly of the thickness of the ice at the present time.
Such nearby waters as Red Lake, Caples Lake and Silver Lake, all on California S.R. 88 in the Kit Carson Pass area, are prime destinations for ice fishermen.
A prudent rule of safety is to wait until the ice has a thickness of at least six inches before attempting to walk out on the surface of a lake.
Here's what was happening as of last weekend:
RED LAKE: The ice was about one foot thick by the dam. About 15 ice fishermen were fishing last Saturday. Some nice-sized brook trout were being caught. Best action was jigging with either Kastmaster lures or orange-colored Power Bait.
CAPLES LAKE: The ice was still unsafe.
SILVER LAKE: No report.
