Arts and writing awards dinner set

The Scholastic Arts and Writing Awards winner's ceremony will be from 2-4 p.m., Jan. 8 presented by the Nevada Museum of Art and local sponsor U. S. Bank.

Nationally, 1,127 secondary school students were honored, which included 53 Nevada students. Local students receiving the award are:

Grades 7-9

Printmaking - Gold Key: Tabatha Theiss, Carson High; Silver Key: Nick Rupert, Carson High.

Graphic Design - Silver Key: Andrew Poehlman, Carson High.

Grades 10-12

Drawing 2 of 3 - Gold Key: Heidi Casper, Carson High.

More than 320 students competed for placement in The Scholastic Arts Awards of 2000 exhibit. The works were judged in late December by a jury of five university-level art instructors and business people from the community. Students competed for awards in painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, printmaking, computer graphics, jewelry, ceramics, mixed media, textile and fiber design, video, animation and senior portfolios of art and photography.

After the exhibition closes at the Nevada Museum of Art on Feb. 6, the works will be sent to New York City for national competition, resulting in cash awards and scholarships. The national awardees will then be honored at The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards National Event in Washington, D.C. in June.

Following the exhibition at the museum of art in January, U. S. Bank will mount a second exhibition at its Reno Main Branch, 200 S. Virginia St. during the annual Uptown Downtown ARTown event in July.
