Brief: railroad program open to public

The public is welcome to "Snow and Railroad Operations in the Sierra," a free program at 7 p.m. at the Nevada State Railroad Museum.

Speakers Rick Cachola and Nelson Van Gundy will illustrate their talk.

While modern machinery and methods have improved the railroads' snow-fighting capabilities, Sierra snowfalls can still reach several hundred inches annually, putting severe strain on men and machinery alike.

The Friends of the Nevada State Railroad Museum presents a free educational program the second Wednesday of each month. Upcoming talks will cover the demise of the Virginia and Truckee railroad and the creation of the Nevada State Railroad Museum.
