Capitols finish second in Woodland tournament

DAVIS, Calif. - After pounding the ball earlier in the day, the Carson Capitols saw their bats fall quiet in a 6-1 loss to host Woodland in the Woodland Summer Baseball Classic finals on Sunday afternoon.

The Capitols only managed three hits against Nick Miller, while Woodland scored four runs in the third inning to take charge of the game at U.C. Davis.

Miller, who played sophomore ball for Woodland High School this spring, only struck out one but kept the Caps in check.

"Their pitcher wasn't overpowering, but he mixed up his pitches well and kept us off balance," Capitols coach Ron McNutt said. "We hit the ball hard, but we hit it right at them."

Earlier, Carson pounded out a 14-4 win against Pepsi-Cola of Olympia, Wash.

Dustin Pedroia, who will be a senior at Woodland High School next year, hit 2-for-3 with a pair of home runs and three RBIs.

Dustin Hahn went 2-for-3 with five RBIs, the big blow a three-run homer in the third inning that broke a 1-1 tie. Joe Jacobitz also hit a two-run double and Jon Fender doubled another run home.

Brian Cochran pitched a six-inning complete game to pick up the win. The left-hander allowed six hits, struck out eight and walked two.

Despite losing the final, McNutt said he was pleased with the club's performance in the four-day, 25-team tournament.

"I was pleased with the kids," McNutt said. "We got to go over there and play six games in three days against some quality ball clubs. I think that's going to help us out as a team."
