Capitols host Feather River College

The Carson Capitols summer baseball club will face a real college exam tonight when it hosts Feather River College in the opener of a two-game series at Carson High School.

The Capitols, 15-2 for their season, and Feather River Golden Eagles will play a single game starting at 7 p.m. on Ron McNutt Field. The same two teams will play again on Wednesday, also at 7 p.m.

"They're quite a bit older than we are, which is going to make a difference, but we just want to go out and play a good ball game," Capitols coach Ron McNutt said. "A lot of our kids want to go on and play in college and this is going to give them a good opportunity to see what it's like."

In Feather River, they'll see a junior college team that has become a playoff contender in just three years of existence. With a lineup that consisted primarily of Northern Nevada products, the Golden Eagles went 32-12 and were one of the final eight teams in the Northern California playoffs this spring.

Feather River's pitching staff was led by Jason Price of Carson City, who has signed to go on and play for the University of Nevada, and Jeremy Kinney of Dayton, who has signed with USF.

Feather River is coached by Jedd Soto, who played summer ball himself for the Capitols.

McNutt indicated he would use several pitchers during the series in order to help the Capitols prepare for the Woodland Summer Baseball Classic on Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Woodland, Calif. The Capitols open Friday at 1 p.m. against El Camino, followed by a 4 p.m. contest against Buchanan (Clovis, Calif.).
