Carson City's Riley honored

Carson City's Dustin Riley helped pace Syracuse University to a fourth-place finish in the men's team standings at the Big East Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, held Feb. 17-19 in East Meadow, N.Y.

Riley, a junior, turned in two sterling performances as he placed second in the 400-yard individual medley and sixth in the 200 breaststroke to give Syracuse 30 points toward its fourth-place total of 407.5.

Riley logged a time of 3 minutes, 55.85 seconds in the 400 I.M., losing by a scant .03 to Mike Pron of Pittsburgh.

Pron, a senior who was named Big East Men's Swimmer of the Year, also won the 200 breaststroke in a conference record time. Riley finished that race with a time of 2:04.85 - just three-tenths out of third-placed.

Earlier, Riley was named to the ECAC Honor Roll for the week of Feb. 7 for his performance during a home dual meet against Florida Atlantic. Riley won the 100 breaststroke in a Webster Pool record time of 58.30, in addition to first-place finishes in the 200 breaststroke and 400 individual medley plus he swam a leg for the Orangemen's first-place 200 medley relay team. His 100 breaststroke time took more than one second off the previous pool record set in 1999. Syracuse defeated Florida Atlantic in the meet, 149-138.

Riley was also named to the Syracuse Athletic Director's Honor Roll for the semester for achieving a 3.0 grade point average or better. He is enrolled in the School of Information Studies.
