Carson girls win ninth straight

The Carson High School girls alpine skiing team is one weekend away from a perfect season.

The Senator girls defeated Wooster, 83-70, and McQueen, 80-75, on Friday at Mt. Rose to improve their season record to 9-0 with the state championships upcoming on Feb. 26-27, the lone event remaining on the schedule. The 9-0 record gave the Senators the regular-season Nevada Ski Racing League championship.

"That's quite an acoomplishment," said Carson coach Jack Reinhardt on the perfect Senator dual-meet season. "Our girls have a real solid core of skiers and will be real competitive at state. They have an excellent chance of beating Reno next weekend. No team has beaten Reno at state since Carson won the title in 1995."

Reinhardt said the Carson girls team is likely to send 8-10 skiers to the state meet, which begins Saturday with the slalom event. The giant slalom event is set for Sunday. The state title is based on a team's performance in slalom, giant slalom and combined (both skiing disciplines). Competition both days begins with the girls' events at 10 a.m.

In Carson's closest competition against McQueen, Kristen Foley was the Senators' top skier in third place with the time of 25.2 seconds. She was followed by Chelsea Anderson (4th, 25.3), Kristen Jenkins (5th, 25.4), Haley Zook (6th, 26.6) and Catarina Farrow (7th, 26.7).

Against Wooster, Carson received good runs from Jackie Nourse (1st, 28.1), Tomi-Jo Johnson (2nd, 29.2), Sara Field (4th, 29.8), Foley (6th, 31.1) and Zook (9th, 32.3).

The Carson boys fell to Wooster, 85-67, and McQueen, 90-60, dropping their record to 4-5.

The top Carson boys times recorded during the day were: Jay Kvam and David Crowell, 23.0 seconds, Vance Harper, 23.2, Eric Marantette, 23.5, and Derek Clemmensen, 23.9. All of those times were recorded against McQueen.
