Carson golf shows off depth

GENOA - Steve Prehm and the rest of the Carson High School boys golf team just might want to consider taking up permanent residence at Genoa Lakes.

Prehm shot 3-over par 75 to earn medalist honors - equaling his previous season best, also at Genoa Lakes - and Carson carded an impressive 400 team total to outdistance Manteca, Calif., and host-Douglas in a 3-way match. Manteca was close behind at 403, followed by Douglas with a 470.

This marked the Senators' third appearance at Genoa Lakes this season, and all three outings have been successful. Carson shot a team-best 375 in its season-opening match at Genoa on March 10 - Prehm shot 75 that day - and the Senators had a 398 on the course just last week.

"That's not an easy course, but we seem to have a comfort zone out there," Carson coach Paul Croghan said.

"Maybe we can get them (Northern 4A conference) to switch the zone tournament so we can play out there," he added with a chuckle.

Prehm, a senior, earned individual medalist honors by two strokes over Manteca's Nate Cook.

Aaron Satterwhite shot 78 and Kyle Bartlett 80, while Chris Boeche carded an 82 and Adam McKenzie 85 to round out Carson's team scoring. Boeche and McKenzie are both sophomores; Satterwhite and Bartlett are juniors.

With the first team staying home to prepare for Carson's own invitational next week, Wednesday showed that the team has up to a dozen players who are capable of shooting within 10 strokes of each other on a given day.

"I think this just kind of reaffirms that we do have good depth on this team," Croghan said.

The Senators host Jesuit (Sacramento) in a noon dual match on Monday at Eagle Valley Golf Course. The Dick Stoddard Memorial/Carson Invitational will be held next Wednesday and Thursday, featuring a field of 18 teams. The tournament is scheduled for a 1 p.m. shotgun start Wednesday on Eagle Valley's East course, and an 8 a.m. start Thursday on the West course.
