Carson City residents are being asked today to open their front door armed with food, if someone knocks between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m..

Carson High School will host a scavenger hunt to collect food for needy families.

"Be prepared and have a can on hand," Carson High School student Jennifer Zehring said. "We'll ask for cans, dried food and turkey."

The event is being organized in conjunction with Friends In Service Helping, a local nonprofit that helps low-income families.

Between 20 and 25 teams of four students each will fan out across the city for one hour for the collection. The event was organized by the high school's student council.

Students earn points for food collected. The three teams with the highest points will earn cash prizes.
